Who We Are
NY Tech Meetup is a 40,000 member non-profit organization that supports the growing NY technology community.
Our goal is to help build a sustainable technology industry that drives economic growth, leads innovation, and creates positive, high-impact change for our local communities and the world.
NY Tech Meetup was first founded as a Meetup group in 2004 by Scott Heiferman (Founder of Meetup.com) and Dawn Barber. The organization became an independent non-profit in 2010 and hired Jessica Lawrence, its first full-time employee and now Executive Director in 2011.

Our discussion forum and mailing lists should never be used to demean, discriminate, threaten, bully, incite violence or in any other way diminish the sanctity of a community that thrives the most when members are being supportive, thoughtful, helpful, and adding value.
We have kept the discussion forum unmoderated to allow for free exchange of ideas, but that does mean that any and all behavior will be tolerated.

What We Do
Connect * Amplify * Advocate * Inspire * Educate * Collaborate
We connect members of the technology community with each other and with resources to help them build successful, sustainable technology companies. We amplify the work of the NY technology community by providing highly visible platforms from which they can showcase what they build.
We advocate for the NY technology community by working closely with elected officials and policy makers on both sides of the aisle to develop policies that support the growth of a 21st century economy. We inspire innovation and growth by exposing the community to new ideas and leading-edge technology.
We educate by curating and sharing the collective wisdom of our community at our events and through multi-media projects. We collaborate with both the technology community and the broader community and provide expert advice to new companies, projects and non-profit organizations.
Our Monthly Event
We are well known for our monthly demo night that has been a cornerstone of our organization since we began.
Once a month we give 9 or 10 technology companies an opportunity to take to the stage at the Skirball Theater at NYU and show the world what they do.
The event is always sold out and draws a crowd of 850 technologists from across the industry, as well as 15 to 20 members of the press.
NYTM has been integral to the birth of New York’s new technology industry, with nearly every notable new company making its debut at NY Tech Meetup’s monthly event. Companies that have demoed at NYTM in the past include: Foursquare, Livestream, Tumblr, Vimeo, Aviary, Audible, Twilio, Aereo, Skillshare, Shapeways, TheLadders, HowAboutWe, Codecademy, and so many others.
Our Other Programs
NY Tech Meetup leads a wide range of other programs to support the NY tech community – from events for women in tech like Women’s Demo Night and Conversations with Women in Tech to starting and building the Made in NY list (a list of tech companies that are at least 50% coded in the city) to hosting a Made in NY event at SXSW to celebrate NY-based startups to creating a series of videos called #StartupStories featuring the expertise of the NY tech community. We look forward to continuing to expand these programs in the future.
